Acorn’s 7th grade students learned valuable “life skills” thanks to a training session provided by Diamond Lakes on Monday, April 24. Students were provided a budget sheet that gave them an occupation ranging from pediatrician to a line cook. It then detailed their annual income and then showed them their net monthly income after taxes before they were given the opportunity to visit booths staffed by community business leaders who posed as very persuasive sales people to make decisions on their housing, transportation, insurance, utilities, meals as well as savings, gym memberships, pets and other discretionary expenses. Students would then visit with budget counselors that would help advise them on living within their budget and different strategies to cut costs and save money.
The session was insightful for students in not only budget planning but also in negotiating with high pressure sales people and learning to prioritize “wants versus needs.”
