Firefighters continue to battle a blaze at 203 7th Street in Mena that began just before 8 a.m. this morning. The two-story home was unoccupied and fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Mena Fire Department requested mutual aid assistance from area fire departments including Hatfield, Ink, Potter, and Dallas Valley.
The home is owned by Ellen Tuton who lives out of town and who has been working on the home, possibly in an effort to sell it. The owner had been on the property as recently as yesterday.
The structure of the home hindered the efforts of firefighters who were able to make it to the top of the stairs before being ‘pushed back.’ To reach the top floor of the home, firefighters had to enter through the roof.
More than 30 firefighters have been battling the blaze, which has been contained. The cause and origin of the fire have not yet been determined. Unfortunately, the home is a total loss.
