Police are still investigating an accident that occurred just after midnight Sunday morning [March 9] involving Cade Lambert, age 27 of Mena, who was standing on the centerline on Hwy 270 just west of Mena near the Rich Mountain Country Store, according to Arkansas State Trooper Kyle Jones.
John Morgan, age 43 of Mena, was traveling eastbound in his 2006 GMC Sierra pickup in dense fog conditions when he suddenly came upon Lambert, who was dressed in dark clothing. Trooper Jones said that Morgan attempted to stop but was unable to and struck Lambert. Morgan and his two children, who were returning from a shopping trip in Ft. Smith, were the only witnesses to the accident.
Jones said Morgan placed a call to 911 at approximately 12:37 a.m. just after the accident occurred in which Lambert sustained multiple and serious injuries. He said Lambert is in critical condition at UAMS in Little Rock.
Officers said it is unclear why Lambert was in the highway but a toxicology report has been ordered.
