If you want to be pampered in luxury, the new Studio at 1142 Salon and Spa, located on Highway 8 East, next to Sophie’s Restaurant in Mena, is the place to go. Owner Lyn Watkins moved her establishment to this larger more accommodating location a couple of years ago and she has since taken Mena uptown with a dazzling array of quality products, state-of-the art equipment and accessories, and a wide variety of treatments for hair and body. Watkins has a flair for style, both in atmosphere and in hair styling, and a deep understanding of cosmetics and cosmetic treatments that will enhance appearance and quality of life for her customers. But she also believes in helping people be the best they can in all aspects.
“Originally we were leasing a building – in our first location – but I wanted to own my location and I really wanted to be on the north end of town,” Watkins explained. “Shortly after opening we discovered this building was for sale, so we bought it and began preparing it for the relocation – new electric, flooring, interior design, and installing a wall central vacuum system for removing cut hair from the environment, which is healthier and safer. We moved into our new location in April of 2009. I had a vision of what I think the perfect salon should look like, and this is it.
“But there is more to it than nice looks,” she continued. “I have made lifelong friends from my customers, and in the process we have helped each other through trials and tribulations. I feel it’s a blessing to give support and get it back. It’s more than just hair, here. It’s wonderful to be able to draw support from friendship and camaraderie, and when things aren’t perfect, sometimes a smile and a strengthening conversation can change the texture of the day. We want our customers to leave here not just feeling great about their hair, but about themselves. This is a happy, fun place. A welcoming place.”
Watkins spent time learning from Eric Fisher, a renowned, award-winning hair stylist who gives seminars across the country and is featured in numerous beauty magazines. She traveled to Oklahoma and Texas for advanced training in microdermabrasion facials (which cleans the surface of the skin and polishes the skin, which helps to bring new, healthy skin cells to the surface), and ultrasonicfacials (which is another method of renewing dead surface cells and stimulating the tissues below, creating collagen growth).
“Ultrasonic facials also help to hydrate, moisturize, and rejuvenate the skin by using cosmeceutical grade products which improve the skin” Watkins said.
“We have added a lot of features to this store that you won’t find in the average salon,” Watkins explained. “Above just style and atmosphere, you can have a pedicure, a manicure, or a facial, and you can have your eyelashes permed. You can have your hair cut and colored, nails done, and you can have microdermabrasion or ultrasonic facial treatments for hands, feet, legs, or neck, as well as your face. We have a very professional staff. Amy Cogburn is a hair stylist and she does pedicures and nails. Amy is an excellent hairdresser. I feel very fortunate to have her working with me.”
Watkins explained that they offer a full range of hair and skin products, hair styling, perms, facials, foiling, makeovers, eyelash perming and tinting, pedicures, and their own line of mineral makeup – Studio Perfect.
“We also offer gift certificates for most of our services and products, and we offer free bang and neck trims,” she added. “We take time to teach our clients how to keep their hair looking great after they leave the salon. We sell accessories for hair design, and in the near future we will be offering classes on using styling tools, brushes, and hair products. We also offer ‘princess parties’ for young children, and we do parties for businesses as a reward for employees or a department.
“My goal from the beginning was to make this a place where customers can receive a special experience – an upscale, attractive but pleasant environment where they feel comfortable,” Watkins continued. “When they walk through the doors, I want our clients to feel like royalty.
“We want to be the place where people feel pampered and truly enjoy themselves,” Watkins added. “We want this to be a place people look forward to visiting – a combination of class, courtesy and casual comfort. Ultimately, I want the time you spend with us to be a very special experience.”
