A running/walking event is set for March 15, 2014 that begins at Janssen Park in Mena, running up Mena Street and over the Talimena Drive to the Queen Wilhelmina State Park. According to Race Director, Dale Powell, “this event was a popular run in the late 80’s and into the 90’s, noted as being one of the most unique runs in the state. Powell says “bringing this event back now has greater purpose as a fund raising event for the Polk County Developmental Center (PCDC). It features not only a running challenge, but showcases the beauty of our area from our city up the highway (Talimena Drive) that overlooks some of the most scenic views of National Forest anywhere, and into the State Park.”
The Talimena 13.1 features entrants that will run the full ½ marathon, also categories of a 2-person relay for each to run half of the course, and a 13-person relay where each team member will run/walk one mile. In addition, another competition for those running the full ½ marathon is they may choose to be a designated four person team, whereby the best combined times will receive an award.
The finish line will be located on the State Park grounds, and while the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge is not available due to the continued renovation, the beauty of the State Park is still an area highlight.
