Last Wednesday, February 21st, the Mena Ladycats senior high basketball team took on the Monticello Lady Billies in the first round of the 4A South Regionals Basketball Tournament hosted by Monticello.
The Ladycats stayed close to Monticello in the first quarter, trailing by just two, 11-9, going into the second. The Lady Billies began to sneak away though in the second, outscoring Mena 17-11, to take an eight point, 28-20, lead into halftime.
At halftime, Smith led Monticello with 13 points, while Paige Evan led the Ladycats with 10 points.
Monticello’s defense held the Ladycats to only five points in the third quarter, while the Lady Billies offense scored 16 points of their own, to extend Mena’s deficit to nineteen, 44-25, going into the fourth and final quarter of play. In the closest quarter of play points wise, Monticello narrowly outscored the Ladyctas by one, 14-13, to make the final score 58-38, in favor of the Lady Billies.
Smith led the Monticello Lady Billies with 17 points in the game, as Scott added on 13 points of her own, Austin 12 points, Donald 11 points, and Brown 5 points.
Paige Evans led the Mena Ladyctas with 19 points, while Kiera Kesterson and Emily Wagner scored 4 points each, Tateli Thacker and Destiny Ortiz 3 points each, Grace Wagner and Brenna Aynes 2 points each, and Gracie Lyle 1 points.
